Micromax Evok Power Review – A Competitively Priced Big Battery Phone

Micromax recently launched a big battery budget phone alternative for the online buyers, the Evok Power. Similar to its other sibling, the Evok Note, the handset retails exclusively on Flipkart for 7,000 INR and tries to capture the best possible specs at its price to entice buyers who prefer to buy online. Let’s detail what the new Micromax Evok Power is all about.

Micromax Evok Power Specifications

  • 5.0-inch HD 720p IPS LCD display
  • 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6737
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Internal storage; expandable up to 32GB
  • 8MP rear camera, dual-tone LED flash
  • 5MP front camera
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • Fingerprint sensor on the rear
  • 4000mAh battery
  • Dual SIM, 4G VoLTE support

Design and Build

Just like Evok Note, the Evok Power comes with a design where you get metal construction on the back and a 2.5D glass in the front. Interestingly, a rubber strip adorns the edges which should help protect your phone in case of accidental drops. The back cover is removable, but the battery is fixed within.

Due to a big 4,000 mAh battery, the phone does feel slightly heavy for a 5-inch smartphone but then this phone is meant for people who are looking for a big battery smartphone. Underneath the back cover, you will find two sim card slots and a micro SD card slot for expanding the storage.

You will find the rear camera, led flash and fingerprint sensor aligned in the center on the back of the smartphone. The Volume rocker and the power button is present on the right side. The 3.5 mm Audio jack and micro USB port are present on the top.

Overall, the phone does feel slightly heavy but at the same time, it also feels sturdy. We really like the design where the company has given a rubber strip around the edges. We didn’t do any drop tests but we think it can survive minor accidental drops.

Display

The Evok Power has a 5-inch HD display which, on paper, is as good as it gets in this budget. Additionally, the company has provided Corning Gorilla glass 3 protection which is usually not there in this price segment.

The display colors and contrast are decent. The touch glass isn’t very smooth but once again, we don’t find much reason to complain about the asking price. Overall, the display is good enough for the budget Android users.

Performance and Software

Performance mainly hinges on the 1.3GHz quad-core MT6737 processor paired with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage (out of which 10.5GB is free at user end). This hardware drives Android Marshmallow based software with light customizations on top. The software does need some polishing but it still shouldn’t be a deal breaker.

We didn’t find any UI lag on the phone in our initial testing but if you are a heavy user, the lag might, after all, creep in after a period of usage or while trying to play heavy games on the smartphone.

The handset is primarily meant for normal users and the performance is optimum for such users. If you are looking for a high-end gaming device, you should probably look for something more powerful with more of free RAM and storage.

We didn’t face any issue with call quality and data connectivity. The fingerprint sensor on the rear works well.

Camera and Imaging

The Evok Power employs an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera. The camera performance of both the snappers is fairly standard. Which is to say that when the lighting is good you can capture workable shots good enough for sharing on Social Media apps but in poor indoor lighting the camera performance falters.

The selfie camera also works fine. You can capture decent quality selfies using the front 5 MP camera. Compared to other phones available in this class, the camera performance is at par with most of the competition devices.

Battery, Price, and Verdict

The 4000mAh battery is what gives Evok Power an edge over its competitors. The battery can last for more than a day of heavy usage. And that’s still quite rare at this price point. With light to moderate usage, you will easily get 2 days of battery backup.

Priced at 7,000 INR, the Micromax Evok Power strikes as a good budget phone with a massive battery. The phone offers sturdy build quality, nice display, and impressive battery. So, if you are looking for a budget smartphone under 7-8K INR which offers excellent battery life you can opt for Micromax Evok Power.
